Cortisol Imbalance and Adrenal Fatigue

The adrenal glands are the key to helping us cope with stress. They are also the first glands to fail under stress. Adrenal fatigue results when the adrenals are functioning at a suboptimal level following constant, intermittent or sporadic stress. When the adrenals are exhausted they become dysfunctional. This can lead to many different illnesses, including fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue, frequent infections or allergies, rheumatoid arthritis, asthma and diabetes. Cortisol, the major hormone produced by the adrenal glands, provides a useful measurement for assessing adrenal gland function.

Cortisol Imbalance occurs when the body’s adrenal glands are not able to make enough of the cortisol hormone. Cortisol helps the body respond to stress. It also helps maintain blood pressure and blood sugar; slow the immune system’s inflammatory response; and regulate the metabolism of proteins, carbohydrates, and fats.

Testing

Come in and take our Adrenal Function Quiz to help determine whether your cortisol needs to be analyzed more deeply.

A Hormone Saliva Test Kit can provide a reading of your Cortisol at various times of the day. These kits are available for purchase at our Pharmacy. You can take the saliva test in the comfort of your home and then book a consultation with the Pharmacist to discuss the results and determine a personalized wellness plan.
